Virginia Woolf uses different addressing to the protagonist on different occasions in her novel Mrs. Dalloway. The three main addressing, Clarissa, Mrs. Dalloway and Clarissa Dalloway are respectively the representative of her id, ego and superego in Sigmund Freud’s tripartite model of the human psyche. This paper is to interpret Clarissa’s psychological conflicts among these three levels, and how to keep a balance between her selfhood and social identity.
