Important Research Project

07/1985-09/1988 National “Seven-Five” Important Research Topic and Hubei Province Scientific Committee Important Research Topic

Customer: China Dongfeng Automobile Corporation and Hubei Tractor Factory

Duties: Research of Austempering Ductile Iron and Manufacturing of Austempering Ductile Iron Gear

The effect of chemical elements, smelting, casting and heat treatment process on microstructures and properties had been investigated, the optimizing chemical elements, smelting, casting and heat treatment process had been established. The High Strength and Toughness of ADI had been manufactured by using low Sulphur and Phosphorus, high Carbone and Silicon with medium Mo and Ni, and then austempering in the 370molten salt. The tensile Strength is due to 1200MPa and the elongation is due to 10% and the impact toughness is due to 150J/cm2. First the casting gears were fabricated by sand mould, secondly the casting gears were machined as semi-fine, thirdly the semi-fine gears were austempered in the370 molten salt bath, finally austempering gears were sandblasted. The gears had been applied in automobile engine (Cummins Engine) and Shenniu Tractor. This project had been awarded Hubei Province Scientific Advanced Prize two-grade.

07/1993-09/1996 Hubei Province Natural Scientific Fund Project

Duties: Research of Process and Properties on Al-Matrix Composites

The Melt-stirred composing and the reactive self-composing process were investigated, the Melt-stirred composing device was designed and manufactured. The compact Al2O3(p)/Al, Gr(p)/Al and SiC(p)/Al composites were made by controlling parameters such as temperature, stirring speed and molding pressure. The key factor is keeping the Al alloy molten liquid between solid and liquid line temperature. The Al/Al2O3 composites were made by reactive self-composing, the key technology is controlling Mg percentage in Al alloy among 3-5wt% and reactive temperature among 1400-1450. The relationship between properties and microstructures was investigated, it has been found that the composites can provide with good synthetic mechanical properties when weight percentage of Al2O3(p) and SiC(p) is about 20wt%. The graphite effect in Al alloy is provided with good wear resistance. High hardness and strength can be obtained while weight percentage of Al2O3 is due to (60-70)wt%. Eight papers had been published, the two of them were embodied by SCI, the two of them were embodied by EI, the one of them were embodied by ISTP.

10/2003-09/2006 Products Research and Development Project

Duties: Design and Manufacturing of Welding, Die Casting, Centrifugal Casting Machine Some small parts forming is difficult for Machine-Electrical Company Attached for HUST, the company signed a contract with me to develop automatic forming machine for small metallic parts. These machines were driven and controlled by reversible transformation motor, the Gas-Hydra composing pressure system was used in the machines. Therefore, these machines had some characters such as small volume; speed controlling and pressure adjusting accurate, moving stable, yawp small. The Company had produced more than ten sets of the machines, which brings a great economic benefit to the company.

07/2000-09/2006 National Natural Scientific Fund Project

Duties: Research of Process and Properties on The Cermets Based on Ti(C,N) The effect of powder sintering process and chemical composition on mechanical properties was investigated, The compact cermets based on Ti(C,N)-Ni were made by controlling parameters such as sintering temperature, heating and cooling speed and addition amount. The key factor is keeping the binder phase Ni wetting Ti(C,N) ceramic, which can be realized by rapid heating through 1000-1300 and holding 60-90 min at 1450-1500, and then rapid cooling through 1500-1300; Also needs some addition elements such as Mo, Cu, Nb, WC and CrC to improve wettability between Ni and Ti(C,N) and to drop down the liquid phase sintering temperature. The relationship between properties and microstructures was investigated, it has been found that the cermets can provide with good synthetic mechanical properties when weight percentage of Ni metal phase is about 30wt%. High hardness and strength can be obtained while weight percentage of Ni metal phase is due to (10-15)wt%. Five papers had been published or accepted, the three of them were embodied by SCI, the one of them were embodied by EI. The cutting tools and metal forming dies had been produced with the cermets.

10/2006-11/2007 The Automobile of The 21st Century (Auto21) Research project-Canada

Duties: Laser lap welding of Zinc Coated Steel Sheets

The defects produced by Zn vapour and the method of the defects prevented were investigated in this project. Along with more and more high strength zinc coated (galvanized) sheet steel was applied in automobile body structures, the laser lap welding of the steels was attended by enterprises. But the only barrier to applying this process widely to high-quality volume production is that the imperfects such as porosity and spattering were resulted from the zinc expulsion at the interface of two sheets. The fundamental principles are discussed first in order to provide a metallurgical background about vapour and boiling of Zn-Al alloy. And then, both Al interlayer thickness and laser welding process are experimented, so the relationship between good surface quality & mechanical property of lap joint and Al interlayer thickness & laser welding process is presented. By double welding procedures, the high travel speed is used in the first welding for forming Zn-Al alloy which has high boiling temperature in the interface, and the low travel speed is employed in second welding for establishing suitable fusion zone, the results show that the process operation is predigested and the mechanical properties is improved for welds with 25μm Al interlayer at the interface.
