中国热带森林主要分布在中国热带北缘的西藏东南部、云南西南至东南部，广西西南部、广东雷州半岛、海南及台湾南部，它们具有与东南亚的热带森林类似的群落结构、生态外貌特征及植物区系组成。在中国热带森林的分布区域，存在中国热带植物区系。依据现有植物区系的记录和资料，中国的热带地区至少具有野生种子植物区系227科2181属12,844种。中国的热带植物区系以热带和主产热带，但分布区延伸到亚热带和温带的科为主，在属的组成上，也以热带分布属占优势，并以热带亚洲分布属所占比例最大, 标志着其热带边缘性质和具有热带亚洲植物区系的特点。因不同地区地质历史及生态环境的差异，中国西南部到东南部各热带地区的植物区系科和属的相似性分别在90%和64%以上, 但种的相似性一般低于50%。中国热带植物区系在不同地区间演化和发展上的差异与喜马拉雅隆升过程中发生的地质事件，如印度支那板块向东南逃逸、云南发生地质板块顺时针旋转和位移、云南南部与东南部在地质历史上曾有隔离以及海南岛向东南的位移等有关。
该论文集选择了作者发表的12篇代表性英文研究论文，结合地质历史，论述了中国热带植物区系的组成与特征、生物地理分异、可能的起源与演化，为读者提供参考。

朱华，理学博士，研究员。1982年毕业于北京林业大学林业系，1987年在中山大学张宏达教授指导下获硕士学位，1991年在昆明植物研究所吴征镒教授指导下获博士学位，1991年1月至今在西双版纳热带植物园从事热带雨林生物多样性保护、植被及植物区系地理研究工作，于1996年晋升为研究员。其中，1994年至1995年在英国剑桥大学植物系，在世界著名热带植物学家T. C. Whitmore指导下深造，研究热带雨林生态学和多样性保护；2001年至2002年由荷兰国家科学基金资助，受聘为荷兰国家标本馆和荷兰莱顿大学客座教授。兼任或曾兼任《Journal of Systematics and Evolution》(SCI期刊)、《Tropical Conservation Science》(SCI期刊)、《广西植物》、《植物生态学报》、《生物多样性》、《热带亚热带植物学报》、《植物分类与资源学报》编委、《植物科学学报》副主编。
